When should cataract surgery be performed?
If patients complain about their current vision or the current vision is low due to the patients’ job, cataract surgery is necessary.
In some cases, cataracts cause symptoms such as glare, which are annoying to patients and patients may require surgery even with good vision. In more severe cases of cataract disease or in cases which retinal observation or treatment is needed, surgeons may advise patients to have surgery earlier. Also, in cases which cataract has caused glaucoma, surgery is necessary sooner. When the cataract has been operated on one eye, cataract surgery on the other eye is very effective in improving binocular vision. If patients have cataract surgery too late, the surgery may be more difficult and more likely to have complications.
What is the treatment for cataracts?
Currently, there is no medical treatment for cataracts, and the only treatment is surgery.
Cataract surgery is performed using the modern technique of phacoemulsification. In practice, the opaque lens is sliced into small pieces and removed from inside the eye. In this method, patients are usually operated with anesthetic drops, and there is no need for eye stitches. Therefore, the recovery period after surgery with this method is short. Cataract surgery is one of the most successful and safest operations in medicine.
