What is a corneal transplant in Iran?
Full-thickness corneal transplants have been used to treat patients for about 100 years. In a corneal transplant, the patient’s corneal tissue is replaced with corneal tissue donated from the eye bank. Corneal transplantation is performed for patients who have severe vision loss due to corneal opacity and irregularity. In these people, other treatments such as hard lenses and laser treatments have not been successful. Recently, new techniques of corneal transplantation; especially lamellar keratoplasty have better visual outcomes and better survival. Patients with severe keratoconus can benefit from DALK (Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty), and patients with corneal edema have better results by endothelial keratoplasty techniques; including DSAEK (Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty) and DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty).
